Bergen County bicycle tour

Residents of Bergen County began the month of June with the fourth annual Bergen County bicycle tour. This one day event was conducted on Sunday, June 1, 2008 at the County administration building in Hackensack. The registration for the event began on site at 7am and many residents of neighboring towns were seen participating at a base registration price of $5. There were various categories of cycling that included a 45 mile ride for advanced riders, 25 mile rides, a 12 mile ride and also a 5 mile fun ride for families and novices. On these rides, the routes touched the towns of Bogota, Closter, Fair Lawn, Demarest and approximately 20 other Bergen County towns. Approximately 300 people participated this year, compared to last year's 250. Many have today switched over to cycling, owing to the hike in gas prices. And added to this is the fact that cycling also helps burn calories much faster.

Housing woes in New Jersey

Statistics reveal that luxury housing reigns high in Bergen County and the neighboring Morris County. The prices of Bergen County homes are noted to be at an average of $900,000. Rentals in this region are also comparatively high and figures show that for an average two bedroom apartment, rents can be afforded only by people who have an annual salary of $45,000 and above. Coupled with this is the fact that the property taxes of New Jersey continue to be quite high and the median monthly housing costs reign at 52% more than rest of America. While this does affect the luxury housing market, more affected are the people seeking affordable homes. Salaries are at $33,000 per annum for many New Jersey residents, and they continue to find housing an expensive proposition.

Rooming houses in Bergen County

Licensed rooming houses are fast emerging as an excellent alternative to renting homes for many residents of New Jersey. While many have the impression that rooming houses have low life residents, this is not true. These are just a cheaper alternative to renting an entire home and works out very well for single occupants. While they may not suit couples and certain personalities very well, rooming houses are on the whole a good option for all those, who want a low cost start up place to live in. The concept of rooming houses involves that the resident is not provided any personal or financial services. In addition to this, all residents of rooming houses, except those with disabilities, need to work. These are also different from boarding houses as the home owner does not live here. Rents for such set ups begin at $125 a week.

Events in Teaneck

A proposed amendment to the Master plan of Teaneck regarding the recreation element is scheduled to be conducted on Thursday, June 12, 2008. The recreation element includes improving the town’s 25 parks and expanding Teaneck's existing park systems. The amendment will be considered for approval by the Teaneck Planning Board at 7pm at the venue. Besides this other items of importance in Teaneck include the deadline for submitting homestead rebate applications for senior and disabled residents of Teaneck. This deadline which was fixed at June 2, 2008 has been extended to August 15, 2008. Besides this, the homestead rebate application deadline has also been extended for eligible tenants, irrespective of whether they are disabled or not. This deadline which was initially at April 15, 2008 has also been extended up to August 15, 2008. Violent thundershowers after scorching heat wave

Residents of Bergen County had a wave of mixed relief after the heat wave brought in torrential rains. The storm came on Tuesday, June 10, 2008, after four days of a heat wave. The violent thunderstorm in the region brought down power lines and cut power to approximately 50,000 Public Service Electric and Gas customers. Trees were uprooted in may regions and obstructed traffic in places like Teaneck where bus passengers were briefly stranded. The storm debris in various parts of the region obstructed traffic and people and many opted to stay indoors. The weather is expected to be more pleasant in the coming week. Residents in Teaneck and the neighborhood have been requested to contact the police department if they have any downed wires or fallen trees in their neighborhood.
