NJ Property Taxes Rise

Homeowners in the various towns of North Jersey will now pay higher property taxes as stated in recent reports. Homeowners will need to pay approximately $375 more in taxes over the coming year. Tax bills will go up by 4.1% in Bergen County which translates to approximately $9,000 on average for Bergen County homes. Along with this, many communities will continue to cut back their services, making homeowners pay more money and in return for fewer services. These changes are seen to come in light of the ongoing economic crisis that grips many parts of the nation. Residents will have to bear a large share of the costs incurred for the operation of schools, local and county governments. As state aids continue to be reduced and other sources of revenue fall short, higher property taxes will be a burden that many homeowners will have to face. While many towns have had to make major increases, towns like Tenafly, Allendale and Teaneck tried to keep their median tax bill from growing by over 2%.

Best of Bergen in 2010

This year’s list of the best things in Bergen County is now out and here are some of the results. Residents of Teaneck can celebrate Couture de Bride and Shelly’s café being chosen as the best bridal store and best brunch outlets. In the town of Englewood, the Bergen PAC was chosen as the best concert venue while Downtown Englewood was selected as the best shopping destination for children’s clothing. The latter was a staff pick, chosen by Heather Zwain, the fashion editor of the cultural portal (201). The title for the best place for a dad’s night out was bagged by Axia Taverna of Tenafly while the Nisi Estiatorio of Englewood was ranked as the favorite new restaurant. The Davis Johnson Park and Garden of Tenafly was also selected as the most scenic public garden during an expert pick. The choice was made by Chris Cipriano, the owner of Cipriano Landscape and Design in Ramsay. The detailed list which contained many titles was carefully prepared through voting and scrutiny by residents and experts.

Reduction of crime rate in Bergen

Residents of Bergen County towns can heave a sigh of relief as statistics show an improved quality of life in the county. Statistics on crime rate and violence show that the region may now be safer to live in. Crime rate was seen to go down by 9% in the county over the year 2009. The main reduction was seen to take place in property thefts which significantly went down. However the rate of other crimes like murder, robbery and rape has remained steady. These statistics were revealed in the Uniform Crime Report which was issued on Thursday, November 18, 2010. Officials added that these statistics were indicative of the skill and dedication of enforcement authorities. However many others were skeptical about these results. Some added that while these figures may hold for 2009, 2010 may show a rise in crime rates. The economy was an active indicator of crime, and incidences could rise with a threatened economy. The statistics of the entire county were also noted to be average. Thus while in towns like Englewood, crime rates have fallen, regions like Demarestshowed double digit increases.

Surprises of Ridgewood

Ridgewood was in for many surprises, as the town bagged many prizes in the 2010 list of the well-known culture portal (201). The town bagged the best tag for its Fourth of July fireworks and also for its centennial parade in 2010. Mango jam of Ridgewood bagged the title of best gift shop while Blend of Ridgewood was chosen as the best place for a girl’s night out. Ridgewood bagged many other titles including best shopping destination, best happy hour (The Office), best local pharmacy (Town and County Apothecary), best homemade ice cream (Van Dyk’s ice cream) and best kid friendly restaurant (Baumgarts). The spot for best sports bar was taken by The Office beer bar and grill and the place for the best sushi in Bergen was adjudged as the Sakura bana. The title for Bergen’s best kept secret also went to Ridgewood and for the first time to a charitable organization called the Junior League of Bergen County.
