Property Taxes Rise in Bergen County

Property taxes in Bergen County grew last year, but at a relatively slow rate. According to statistics, the average residential property tax bill for Bergen County homes was $9,735 in 2009. This was a 3.8% increase over 2008’s figure. In 2008, the increase was 4.6%, and in 2007 it was 6.1%. As these figures show, however, while property taxes in New Jersey continue to increase, the rate of increase is declining. In some Bergen County towns, property taxes jumped: for Alpine homes, the average property tax increased by 9%. In raw numbers, Tenafly homes experienced the highest property taxes in 2009 at $17,411, followed by Alpine at $17,236. Besides figures in Bergen County, statistics across New Jersey reveal a similar picture. 2009 marks the fifth consecutive year that the increase in property taxes has not been substantial. A local tax levy cap was signed into law by Governor Corzine in 2007 to help reduce the growing property taxes.

Major Storm in Bergen County

As a major storm hit Bergen County towns, many areas were left without power for long periods. Adding fuel to the fury of many, rescue efforts in various cities were hampered by the severity of the storm. In some locations, repairmen could not reach the affected areas where repair work was needed due to the harsh weather. The storm that began on 24 February went on for four days and left many affected. Besides power outages in many regions, the heavy snow deposited by the storm also blocked roads. Trees toppled in many towns, cutting off transmission lines and making it difficult for many to communicate. Motorists were advised to stay at home and avoid using the roads as much as possible. While police did report to the scenes of power outages, many said that there were fewer accidents as people heeded the advice.

Commercial Real Estate in Bergen County

The market for Bergen County commercial real estate is experiencing an increase in the number of commercial foreclosures. Statistics reveal that there were 97 commercial foreclosures in Bergen County filed in 2009, compared to 57 cases filed in 2008. Beyond the county, the rate of commercial foreclosures rose by 70% across New Jersey. This developed when companies reduced their operations, vacated their office space or left industrial sites unused. Figures also show that, as some borrowers could not repay funds, many walked away from their properties. Foreclosures alone are bad enough for the people involved, but real estate experts warn that they can also create a ripple effect and bring down general real estate prices.

Englewood Offers Healthy Options

As February ends, various events are lined up for residents of Englewood concerned with their health. The Englewood Hospital and Medical Center is conducting semi-annual vein screenings, free of charge. The screenings are advised for people with visible vein abnormalities, such as spider veins or bulging varicose veins. A screening typically consists of a physical examination, a review of the patient’s medical history and further suggestions as needed. Pre-registration is required for the event, which is scheduled from 24 February through 1 March. Another important event at the hospital is a seminar on mind and body stress management skills. During the program, to last from 23 February to 30 March, participants will learn skills to manage the physical, mental, emotional, spiritual and social dimensions of their lives. The entire six week program is available for $390, and payment plans are available. For more details, please contact the hospital directly.

Security Improvements Planned in Cresskill

An improved software program can now help enhance emergency services in the town of Cresskill. Under this program, part of a software upgrade, the chiefs of the police, fire and emergency departments will now get immediate information on emergency situations. While the upgrade’s benefits are not in doubt, officials add that it does come at a price. For $85,000, officials will be allowed to upgrade their systems to the new software and also to be trained in its operation. Support for the program and annual maintenance is also included in the cost of the upgrade. A bond ordinance has been raised to generate funds, and a public hearing will soon be held on the matter. Officials add that a new and improved system was necessary to improve Cresskill standard of living. The software upgrade is expected to connect emergency service providers better and thus to control mishaps at the earliest stage. Additional benefits will include: comprehensive mapping, pinpointing locations of fire hydrants in emergency situations and providing comprehensive immediate information to various department heads simultaneously.
