Bergen County Safety of Homes in Threat
In new development, the state environmental officials of Bergen County ordered tests in 350 homes at Pompton lakes to check the levels of chemical vapor present. This came up after five homes were found to have levels that were much higher than the state’s acceptable standards. The cause for these vapors was noted to be a century old former explosive plant owned by Dupont. Its operations had led to underground pollution in the region. Tests were also conducted to check whether these vapors will affect the safety of drinking water. The Du Pont company has spent approximately $130 million for clearing up the site. It will also provide venting pipes to clear the vapors in the five affected homes. DEP has also ordered Dupont to conduct tests for checking levels of vapor in nearby homes. The company is providing indoor air sampling and a protective vapour mitigation system to all residents. In this regard, Dupont has also reported that drinking water is safe as municipal wells are one mile away from the polluted area.
Lead Levels High in Some Turfs of Bergen County
Artificial turf fields in Bergen County now pose a new threat: that of lead poisoning. Four such fields in schools of North jersey showed large amounts of lead. They have been closed for the past two weeks because of this. Five such artificial turf fields in Bergen County’s regional sports complex at Palisades Park are also being tested. Tests are to be performed by the PMK group and the results will be revealed in a few days time. As per the CDC, young children should keep away from fields that have over 400m per k of lead. State tests also revealed that humans can easily absorb lead present in artificial turfs. While parents of Bergen County children are concerned, health experts stated that only prolonged contact with the fields can cause poisoning. Also it would need to be taken in large quantities before it is harmful. The fields are thus safe and not an issue of imminent danger, as per state health experts. After the testing of 13 turfs in New Jersey is complete, the Health department is requesting that 50 fields across the nation also be tested for large levels of lead.
