Edgewater Construction Project Gets a Boost

The ferry and marina construction project at Edgewater is getting a boost of additional spending up to $3.04 million, as two proposals for construction work were submitted to the borough. Officials state that the proposals exceeded expectations and stood at $8.4 million from Austin Helle of Cedar Grove and $11.8 million from Spearin, Preston & Burrows of Staten Island, N.Y. The various borough officials have estimated the total cost of the project, including the land, at $14 million to $17 million. In a closed session of council members held on Monday, November 14, 2005 it was voted that an ordinance to appropriate $9.5 million and authorize the sale of $3.05 million in bonds for the project be introduced.

Housing in Meadowlands, Bergen County

Two eighteen storied residential towers will soon come up on a patch of land along the west bank of the Hackensack river. This nine-acre spot had been a contested patch of land, but now has received clearance from the judge for the construction. This spot is situated at the foot of Paterson Plank Road and straddles Carlstadt and East Rutherford. As per the ruling, the Tomu Development Corp. can build 700 units of market-rate housing and 140 affordable-housing units on the site. While the land has been held through the 1990s by private owners, it was never developed. It was thus rezoned for recreational purposes in 2004 by the commission.

Palisades Towers to come up at Cliffside Park

Construction will soon begin on the proposed twin-tower luxury condominium on the Palisades at Cliffside Park. This came through as the developers of the proposed towers, settled a lawsuit that was challenging their zoning approvals, clearing the way for construction to begin. However, they still have to go through the building permit process and the first step would be to obtain demolition permits to bring down the four houses and garden apartment complex on the site. The 131-unit project on Adolphus Avenue and Gorge Road had won approval in January after the developers scaled down the final plan, eliminating one floor and 12 units in response to concerns about the size of the complex. The board granted variances for height, use, front-yard setback and retaining-wall height. The suit filed on them by the neighbors however had claimed the board exceeded its authority by approving a change of use and height variances to permit construction of the 14-story towers in a zone restricted to four-story buildings. Out of court settlements have been reached with the residents.

Cedar Lane Streetscape Project at Teaneck

The Cedar Lane streetscape project is on in full swing. As part of this project, the Teaneck Economic Development Corp. and the Township Streetscape Redevelopment Project are selling engraved brick pavers for the new pedestrian plaza on Cedar Lane at Chestnut Avenue. This plaza is all set to be opened in May 2006. Currently there are 700 pavers available at the cost of $75 each. Up to five pavers per person may be purchased and the funds obtained will go to the streetscape loan payback fund. The bricks are 4 inches by 8 inches and can hold up to 13 letters per line on three lines. The paver sale ends Dec. 1.

Better Transport for Residents in Bergen County

Residents in North Bergen will soon have access to better transport facilities. This comes through as the township will soon receive two 18-passenger mini-buses and up to $60,000 in start-up money over three years to begin a shuttle service to encourage residents to use NJ Transit buses and the new soon-to-open Light Rail station on Tonnelle Avenue. The buses will come equipped with chair lifts and leased at no charge to the township. However, these are expected to be delivered in late 2007 under the transit agency’s Community Shuttle Program. The uptown route will zigzag east and west, picking up residents between 72nd Street and Park Avenue and 79th Street and Bergenline Avenue. The midtown route will serve residents between 43rd and 51st streets by shuttling them to either the light rail station on Tonnelle Avenue and 50th Street, set to open in January, or the Union City station at 49th Street and Bergenline Avenue.
