The best public high schools in Bergen County and other parts of New Jersey have now been ranked. The data for this purpose was obtained from the State Department of Education’s New Jersey School Report Card (2004-2005 school year) and analyzed by the Monmouth University Polling Institute. Special-education schools, vocational-technical schools and schools without report card data were however excluded from the study. Results revealed that various top slots went to schools in Bergen County. Tenafly Schools ranked a prestigious No. 2, while Glen Rock, Allendale’s Northern Highlands Regional and Cresskill ranked 6, 7 and 15. The Northern Valley Regional at Demarest ranked 16 while Leonia ranked 67. Fort Lee ranked at 99, Teaneck at 102, Bogotá at 132 while Dumont was at 174. The parameters used for ranking the schools involved school environment, student performance and student potential fulfilment.
For those seeking a home in Bergen County, Alpine will soon have stately houses along the Closter Dock Road. Over 60 acres of continuous meadows will soon comprise of homes for sale, if the Alpine planning board accepts the plans filed by developer Richard Kurtz. Richard purchased the land in January for $58 million and plans to construct homes in a 3-phase manner. The first phase of this ambitious project would comprise of constructing four homes. The smallest among these lots would be 3.765 acres while the largest would be 13.134 acres. In this large home Dr. Henry Clay Frick II (of Frick estate) would reside until he moves out or dies. The property would then revert to Kurtz. Most of the other Bergen County properties would range from 5 to ten acres as per plan. The land expanse is huge and comprises of huge meadows, lovely trees, plants and a brook. It would be a grand project and extremely top of the line. Markets have been receptive too and people are already enquiring about buying the property. Bergen County’s Best Citizens Awarded
As the Bergen Catholic High School celebrates its 50th anniversary, the Bergen County school honoured 50 men and women who made major contributions to Bergen County. At a commemorative lunch that was held on Friday, October 6, 2006, the school congratulated and recognized the efforts of various politicians, doctors, entertainers, businessmen and leaders in community service. While many names on the list were well known to citizens there were various other people who had made significant contributions but were not much featured in the media.
Open Space and More Security for Teaneck Residents
An open space and recreation plan is underway for Teaneck as residents participated in a public hearing on the issue on October 4, 2006 at Teaneck Hall. To make the project a reality, the Environmental Commission and Open Space Plan Project Team are working with the Morris Land Conservancy. A preliminary draft of the plan has been prepared and inputs sought from the public during the October 4 meeting.
Besides open space, Teaneck will also enhance the security for its schools. The Police Department received a $250,000 federal grant for this purpose. Officials state that most of the funds from the Safe Schools grant would be used for purchasing closed-circuit security cameras for the Teaneck High School and the two middle schools in the school district. Besides this, funds would also go into training police officers in current juvenile law.
Teaneck Makes Plans to Ease Taxes
Teaneck officials are now in the process of formulating plans that will help them to ease tax burdens on the residents. For this purpose, the township council has hired a planning firm called Birdsall Engineering, which will design a development initiative. A public meeting with the firm would be held soon. This firm will be paid $87,400 for the project and will work in collaboration with the council, township boards, commissions and residents towards the common purpose of shifting the tax burdens from residents. In this regard, the four business districts of Teaneck would be revitalized. Plans would also include attracting wider range of sellers and shoppers to the town while improving the standards of living for Teaneck residents.
