Tenafly Home Owners Preserve Their Neighbourhood

The Bergen County town of Tenafly will soon see the creation of a third historic district. This came up after a group of residents in Park Street started seeking ways to preserve the look of their block. They approached the Tenafly Historic Preservation Committee and discussions and debating began between protecting real estate property rights and preserving history. The council voted at 3-3 on the issue. The members who dissented felt that while the area had a rustic feel to it, a historic designation did not seem correct. However the members in favour of the project felt that it was a good way for Park Street to maintain its character. Finally Mayor Peter Rustin cast the deciding vote in the favour of preservation, which would now create the town’s third historic district.

Bergen County Office Construction

While Bergen County property is less becoming scarce, buyers are still making the most of the land available. As a result, a Bergen County office building, the first of its kind to come up without tenants lined up, will now be constructed. RREEF, the New York subsidiary of Deutsche Bank bought the real estate property and confirmed on Thursday, September 21, 2006 that work would soon begin on the new 66,000 square foot building. The area of the land is spread over 26 acres at 115 West Century Road in Paramus. Developer Martin A Kwartler of Kwartler Associates of Waldwick also added that work would most likely be completed by the fall of 2007. The building would be close enough to Route 17 and hence make it easier for commuters to travel.

Bergen County Ranks Favourably In New Jersey Top Towns List

Researchers from the Monmouth University’s Polling Institute have now compiled a list of New Jersey Monthly’s 2006 Top Towns list. This comprehensive list ranks the towns on the basis of eight categories that serve as best parameters for considering the quality of life in New Jersey’s 566 municipalities. The parameters include property taxes, home values, population growth, land development, employment, crime rate, school performance, and proximity to services. Household income levels were however not considered and home values were measured as per their rate of rise over five years. While rating land development, towns with slower growth and more open space got higher ratings. According to the data, ratings in the Bergen county towns were quite favourable. The Cresskill Borough ranked 259, while Tenafly and Demarestranked at 37 and 49 with population of 14,214 and 4,938 respectively. Rockleigh ranked at a favourable position of 4 with a population of 396 while Teaneck ranked 311 with 39,853 population figures.

Bergen County Residential Health Survey

A health-related survey of Bergen County residents revealed many startling facts. The survey conducted by the Community Health Improvement Plan showed that many residents of Bergen were either uninsured, overweight, highly stressed or prone to excess smoking or drinking. Over 50% of adult Bergen County residents are overweight or obese and every one-in-three residents reports of too much job-related stress. Over half of the adult population of Bergen also feels that mental health services in Bergen County need to be further improved. This need was seen to be even stronger with residents who come below 200 percent of the poverty level. Officials in the county intend to use survey results as parameters for improving Bergen County’s public health services, law enforcement services, businesses, public health education services, social services and faith groups.
