Tenafly works to preserve nature
The Nature Center of Tenafly may soon grow in size, if borough officials are able to channelize funds properly. As per plans, an acre of undeveloped land may be acquired from its current owners: an independent family and a business corporation. The land currently belongs to a 2.06 acre parcel. The owners of the land, plan to divide it such that they retain the nineteenth century house while one acre is put up for sale. The acreage put up for sale currently has over fifty mature trees and environmentalists say that selling it off to developers would mean losing out a good opportunity on preserving nature. Another attraction to environmental conservationists is the presence of Pfister’s pond in the tract. This pond is connected to various streams and the Hackensack River watershed also. If private development occurs, the flora, fauna and wildlife of the pond may affected. If the borough acquires the land for Tenafly Nature Center, the area would continue as a forested tract. Money for buying this may be generated by using funds from local residents, the county and state. The township is also hoping to benefit from the $1 million Bergen County Open Space Trust fund. Green Acres funds may also be obtained for the project. With its hopes banked on various funds, the actual amount of funds to be required from the various funds has not yet been finalized upon.
Housing rentals in Dumont for the elderly
Senior citizens can now look forth to new housing construction in Dumont. Construction of housing for senior citizens is now underway at where a convent once stood. Crews demolished the convent at St Mary’s church in the last week of August. The housing unit that will come up in its place will consist of fifty units in four storeys of the building. As per estimates, one housing unit will be allocated to the building manager while 49 units will be rented out to senior citizens. People who wish to avail of these apartments must be 62 years or older and must have an annual income less than $32,000. The housing development is indicated to bring a one time cash infusion to the church and is also expected to help the Church reach out to this segment of people. Catholic charities stated that they would extend social services to the residents while Domus, housing wing of Roman Catholic Archdiocese will build and operate the housing facility. In exchange of the housing project, borough officials of Dumont have benefited from a piece of land given by the Church. This land would be used to regulate the flow of traffic in the region. Construction is expected to begin in late September and complete by the fall of 2009.
