Tenafly residents recently received a mailer presenting the proposed Tenafly School Budget for 2011-2012. The vote on the budget will take place on April 27th 2011 and all residents are encouraged to participate in this important decision. Tenafly schools have long been its main attraction for many families. Tenafly High School has consistently been ranking among the top 5 best high schools in the state of New Jersey. In addition to the immediate and longer term impact on the quality of education in Tenafly, the vote will also have implications on real estate values in town
With the recent economic challenges many New Jersey towns lost a large part of the previously counted on state aid. In the budget year of 2009-2010 Tenafly lost about 71% of the state aid ($1,380,290) which was one of the major factors leading to the proposed tax levy of 1.25% towards the school budget for 2011-2012.
The proposed budget of $58,216,796 includes $563,057 received in State aid for the budget year of 2011-2012.
Other factors contributing to the proposed increase are; increase in health insurance, workers comp, social security, property/liability insurance & increase in utilities & energy.
Should the school budget be defeated, state law requires that the Mayor and Council determine the items and dollar amounts to be cut. The decision of the Mayor & council on the revised budget will be final & binding.
