In a meeting of Northern Valley Mayors and NJ Transit officials that took place in September, Tenafly mayor Peter Rustin said that Tenafly is still adamant about not extending the light rail to the borough, and NJ Transit is aware of its concerns….
A disproportionately low 17 percent of total Bergen County commuters use rail service, as compared to 60 percent in Union County and nearly 50 percent in Morris, Middlesex, and Essex counties. The Northern Branch Corridor Project is proposed to address the transportation needs of southeastern Bergen County through the re-introduction of rail transit service on the Northern Branch line. “It looks right now that it just may extend to Englewood, but NJ Transit made it clear that the project is not imminent and may still take some time,” Rustin said…
NJ Transit is currently reviewing responses from the Draft Environmental Impact Study (DEIS), said Nancy Snyder, NJ Transit’s spokeswoman.
“The meeting was a request to speak to NJ Transit about the light rail and mainly the situation remains unchanged,” Snyder said. “No source of funding has been identified at this time.”
Tenafly Mayor Peter Rustin confirmed there were 10-15 mayors in attendance and added he felt like it was more of a meeting where the upper Northern Valley mayors “lobbied” to get the light rail extend their way….
