As Governor Christie calls for a major overhaul of how the state gives the benefit of a “job for life” . Districts throughout North Jersey are denying the prize of tenure to educators who, aren’t performing up to standards. Normally Teachers get tenure on the first day of their fourth year in a district, however, it is not guaranteed. There are no clear statistics as to how many teachers get tenure.
As tenures are rarely revoked and, as the legal steps to revoke a tenure may take years and hundreds of thousands of dollars, getting a tenure is almost always a guarantee for a lifelong employment with benefits. According to the state Education Department, only 17 tenured teachers have been fired for incompetence over the past ten years.
In Tenafly candidates for tenure are usually publicized and parents are encouraged to participate and offer their feedback. Tenafly school board president Phyllis Kesslen said that “Tenafly has always been careful about who they give tenure to but all the discussions on tenure and whether there should be tenure or not has raised the level of consciousness about who gets it” .
