Council Man Honing in a recent meeting pushed for increased involvement of the council in the hiring of Tenafly police personnel. Honig asserts that neighboring towns of similar character have a greater involvement and say in the hiring of their local police manpower. The current status in Tneafly allows the council’s say only in the appointment of the police chief.
Honig further claims that the current level of involvement of part of the council is short of what is perceived as best practice in the neighboring towns. According to him too much power is left in the hands of the police chief. Honig’s contrarians including the mayor Rustin, are of the opinion that such measures will politicize the process that, according to them , has worked well so far.
