The governing body passed a resolution to award a contract to Earth Networks Inc.
Officials voted unanimously on April 30 to award the contract and access the Open Space funds necessary for the project. The Tenafly council and the Board of Education hope to begin the process in June.
The equipment will cover nine outdoor locations including Municipal Field, Sunnyside Field, Davis-Johnson Park and six public school sites.
The Tenafly Department of Public Works will maintain and operate the detection system.
It is expected that the system will reduce the potential for injuries or deaths related to lightning strikes caused by storms.
The Earth Networks lightning sensor network, known as the Earth Networks Total Lightning Network (ENTLN), is the world’s largest lightning detection network. ENTLN incorporates the most advanced lightning location technology and is the first
network to detect both in-cloud (IC) and cloud-to-ground (CG) lightning. Nearly 700 lightning sensors from around the globe provide updates to the Earth Network weather network, making ENTLN the world’s largest and fastest lightning detection network.
