Following a survey conducted back in March of this year The Tenafly Board of Education voted to;
-
- close the schools on Election Day
- begin the school year September 5 instead of September 6
- make February break a four-day weekend instead of a full week
- move spring break from the week of April 22 to the week of April 8.
As a result of the above changes the board is now able to end the school year on June 21 instead of June 26. What prompted the survey and consequently the changes to the acdemic school calendar was a letter from the commissioner of elections and county superintendent urging the district to close on Election Day for the safety of the students.
Those who participated in the survey had three choices ;
- eliminating the Asian New Year – this choice was voted for by 70% of respondents
- eliminating the second day off for the Jewish Rosh Hashanah – this choice was voted for by 57% of respondents
- shortening the February break to a four-day weekend – this choice was voted for by 36% of respondents
