Tenafly, A Town with International Flavor

Tenafly, New Jersey, is a small Bergen County borough of approximately 14,000 people from all over the world. The cultural diversity within the residents on this community has not only helped it grow and thrive, but has also made it a very appealing place to live, both on a local level and an international level. But why are people flocking to this picturesque town? Anat Eisenberg says that “the common denominator is the appeal of the schools,” along with the proximity to the city.

One family that moved to the US from Italy spent two years finding the perfect place to call home. Dominique Calzoni, creative director for Manrico Cashmere, says that they weren’t happy with other options within a reasonable commute to the city, but that once they found Tenafly they were amazed and felt that the “schools [were] really something – amazing”. And that her family “loves how green it is and the distance to the city.”

These are just two of the factors highlighted in the recent Wall Street Journal article talking about Tenafly’s appeal to a broader international audience. The borough was independently incorporated in 1894 and has grown steadily ever since. The residents today are well-to-do families with diverse backgrounds and heritage that place a strong importance on education. Ms. Eisenberg also notes that “the international [housing] market here is very strong.”

This international appeal has helped keep the local housing market strong. In fact, home prices are increasing, “but within reason,” assures Anat.  The median price of a home in Tenafly (as of August 2016) was $935,750, up almost $150,000 from this same time last year, according to the New Jersey Multiple Listing Service.

Along with great schools and the easy commute to Manhattan via the Washington Bridge, Tenafly also has a bustling local business community, cultural experiences, manicured parks and leisure areas, and restaurants that explore the international heritage of its residents.
