Metropolitan Evangelos, head of the Greek Orthodox Metropolis of New Jersey, performed the elaborate, historical ceremony at the chapel, which is in a wing of the Cathedral of St. John the Theologian in Tenafly. The consecration was the final touch, a spiritual one, to mark completion of a $500,000 renovation of the chapel, its lobby and church administrative offices.
The chapel’s ceremony marked the first time in decades that there has been a Greek Orthodox consecration in Bergen County, according to St. John officials, and the metropolitan said he has only performed three during his decade-long tenure.
